A certain Jersey attitude
Featured Grownups wants to know if your town is a good place to visit. I have certainly posted, from time-to-time about some of New Jersey's treaures and about it's oddities.
But perhaps what appeals to me most about New Jersey is a certain Jersey attitude. I've posted this before, but I'm gonna post it again. (You got a problem with that?)
Here in New Jersey, we know that sometimes you just have to be able to laugh at yourself. In 2005, when the state's Division of Tourism unveiled a new state slogan (a slogan which would have been lousy even if it had been free, but in fact cost us roughly a quarter of a million dollars in consultant fees), our Governor at the time (actually our acting Governor, but that's another story) turned the job over to the citizens, asking for our recommendations. In a matter of weeks, the state received nearly 8,000 suggestions. Here are a few:
"Great place to visit. You just can't afford to move here."
"The traffic will kill you. Have a nice day."
"Three-quarters of the state is really nice."
"What happens here stays in a landfill."And my personal favorite:
"Most of our elected officials have not been indicted."

Those are great slogan! I hope some enterprising soul has put them on tee-shirts and bumper stickers.
Lol. Those are brilliant slogans.
This would be funny if it weren't so true. Similar things can be said about nearly every other place, too. Sad commentary on our times.
The air in New Jersey looks nice. I've always been partial to that bluish-grey hazy color!
Ah, so that's where Ed gets his inspiration to type upside down, eh?
Now you're making me miss my Joisey cousins all over again.
I have relatives in Jersey! I'm safe I think.
@AprilsPlace - If only we had trademarked the notion of corrupt local officials, we could solve our state budget problem with the payments we'd receive from all the other states who have copied our model of corruption.
@GoodGuyTheBoss - Safe from what?
In my home state (Washington) we simply do not have that good a sense of humor. Of that alone you guys should be proud
I think it looks nice and I see Ed,too. Which slogan won? Is it the Jersey attitude ?
Were in New Jersey Newport just this weekend (business/family(Brooklyn)/fun) and loved it. Did a weekend long West Coast Swing bash and danced on the pier at the Hyatt on the Hudson Bay with perfect and beautiful views of Manhattan, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. What a beautiful place.
...sounds like three quarters of the residents have a great sense of humour...nice slice of humanity here...i didn't know DJ's could read ; )
Joisey rocks.
You are linked FINALLY. No kidding, I've been extremely busy and at the most crucial times, my internet has been down. Sorry for the delay.
I had to spend the night in New Jersey once. The town is called "Mahwah." That just kills me! I think that is one of the funniest town names I have ever heard. You nailed the Jersey attitude very well.
And no.....I don't have a problem with that!
You forgot two Jersey successes--Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen.
Indeed,..."joisey rocks!" Loved the piccies!!
Got a good belly laugh from the slogans. Say what you will about the Jersey attitude, but some of the best buddies this Floridian had in the army were from Joisey. All jovial with a good sense of humor (and they were all Irish...)
