It's the library.
When I was a little kid, I don't remember going to book stores, but I do remember going to libraries. Every week, without fail, browsing the shelves, borrowing books, discovering new worlds. I never gave much thought to how such a place could exist, why such a place would exist. It was just the library. Of course it was there. It even had a great theme song.
This year, National Library Week (April 11-17) celebrates the theme "Communities thrive @ your library." I've had the privilege of spending quite a bit of time the last few years in libraries, participating in library programs, chatting with librarians and with library patrons.
If it's been a while since you've visited your local public library, this would be a great time to renew the acquaintance.

drat, you said latest and greatest and I was prepared for the questioning of the go faster stripes present.... have fun. ;)
I loved libraries as a kid, and still do as an adult but I've been guilty of staying away too long of late. I still remember the looks I'd get taking my kids there, and with them, choosing 40 or more picturebooks at a time to haul off in our storage box, when they were smaller. Why not? The limit was 99 books! I once calculated we'd borrowed well over 10,000 items by the time they were 11 and 8. And we adored reading them all.
A good reminder for me to get back into the habit.
I am fortunate to live between 2 local libraries. They both offer different books and magazines. They even deliver to those who can't make it in to pick up their items. I can't seem to make my grands understand you can "borrow" books and return them for others. They want to own every book they read. Lucky for writers!
Whoop whoop...and it's free!
I love going to the library. I try to go to my local library often as I can. Too bad I don't live in Philadelphia, otherwise I'd stop by.
I had not heard that song previously. It did bring back memories of my visits to local library during the summers in my grade school years. I spent many summers reading books from the local library. There was maple tree in my back yard that I could climb. I made myself a seat of two limbs that served to support my back and thighs. That's where I read the books I got from the library during the summer.
"Thanks for the memories". Hooray for libraries.
