I stare at the stars (updated)
For generations on end, men and women have looked toward the heavens and been inspired to write poetry. I'm no poet, but even in my own case, I managed to scratch out this haiku -
I stare at the stars
counting the syllables in
Cassiopeia.
But today's post isn't about me. It's about B. Kliban. When people remember Kliban (if they remember him at all) they think of him as the guy who drew all those cat cartoons. But a closer look at his cartoon collections reveals that B. Kliban, at heart, was a poet -There goes that rotten Haley's comet.
It makes me sick, I want to vomit.
You can find those two lines of pure poetry in Kliban's Whack Your Porcupine, or perhaps, Never Eat Anything Bigger than Your Head and Other Drawings. I'll check the reference when I get home.
I read those two lines more than thirty years ago, and felt a need to share them with you today. Consider it my contribution to National Poetry Month.EDIT: My memory is pretty good, but not perfect. The lines are indeed found in Whack Your Porcupine (1977, Workman Publishing). But I forgot the caps and the exclamation points and the spelling error -
THERE GOES THAT ROTTEN HALLEY'S COMET!
IT MAKES ME SICK! I WANT TO VOMET!

I've read this haiku of yours somewhere before, and it is beautiful! Kliban is funny--I love that title, "Whack your Porcupine."
I like your style.
You writers are so talented. Thanks
That's great.
Yes, the punctuation makes it ever so much better, LOL!
how funny! I had that "never eat anything..." book for years it was rich and hilarious. I often think of the word plays and puns even to this day. I was just thinking about the "Fent" Fence" or "Fents" or which ever it was, and the people laughing at Judy's Tiny head... those cartoons were so out there. And I remember that Halley's comet poem too.. . I think one teacher spoke about it, perhaps the commet was actually coming around at that time...
Thanks for the memories!
Forgive me if I mentioned this LAST National Poetry Month.......when I was a restaurant manager I celebrated "Bad Poetry Day" by handing out cards and inviting guests to participate by writing one of their own. I got some truly awesome entries. If I ever can locate them, I'll post.
Love your Haiku.haha...the first one is so poetic, the second makes me think of an old man shaking his fist...
what caught my eye was your ref to B, Kliban. Cats cartoons did indeed jump to mind.
Also, I guess in the 70's Caps were PC.if you want a really good laugh...there's a poetry book called Haiku For Jews
